Evoting

These pages form an archive of material related to evoting, and have not been updated in some time. I may return to them one day, if and when the British government decides to pursue evoting again.

These pages contain more than 200 annotated resources on voting and electronic voting (e-voting): design, usability, accessibility and security aspects (including verified voting) of both old and new technologies. Includes material relating to kiosk (DRE) systems and remote Internet voting.

There are as yet few materials on usability of voting and electronic voting – most are US, and you’ll find them listed in the US section.

There’s extensive material for the UK and US (including research, government reports and news coverage), and less extensive coverage of other parts of the world, including existing and proposed e-voting systems in Ireland, Brazil and India.

You’ll also find a considerable number of blog entries on e-voting.

Do let me know of initiatives or research in other parts of the world that you don’t find listed here.

Introductory material
For an introductory background to the issues surrounding electronic voting systems, see David Dill’s briefing paper (PDF).

This document from the EU Cybervote project provides an introduction to the history of electronic voting.

For an excellent introduction to the issues involved in voting usability, read Whitney Quesenbery’s text Voting for Usability: Background to the issues. Quesenbery leads the Usability Professionals’ Association Voting and Usability Project.
